Immigrant children are caught between two cultures. Mom and Dad are trying to hang onto the culture they know and are comfortable with while the children are trying to become Americans. This struggle makes the children vulnerable. There are many “coyotes” just waiting to pounce on a vulnerable child.
A twenty-something told me how he and his brother began to disrespect their parents as they were able to speak English fluently while their parents struggled with the new language.
Thats why it was so fun to be at a summer end celebration at one of our Novaland Associate Centers. The whole evening was in English, Spanish and Korean. The highlight of the evening for me was to see immigrant parents willing to get involved in the American tradition of a pie eating contest. The kids literally jumped up and down as they watched their parents.
